The waste-to-energy plants differ from the old incinerators as they don’t just burn waste, but produce electricity from the waste matter itself.

In some cases, they even produce heat which is then transported to homes by a district heating network. In addition, the emissions of waste-to-energy plants - thanks to technological evolution, which has allowed us to minimize the environmental impact - are sometimes lower, for certain parameters, than those resulting from the fossil fuels that are used to produce energy.
