Cutting Down on Packaging
In the supermarket of waste, habits are very bad indeed: non-biodegradable bags are handed out, the product
packaging is always excessive, polystyrene abounds. Packaging is designed to attract the consumer rather than to conserve the product adequately!
For example, we happened to buy a box of chocolates containing 20 chocolates, of which there were chocolate-coated
cherries, pralines, truffles, and toffees - 5 of each type.
Each chocolate, wrapped in silver paper, was then enclosed in a small sachet. Every group of chocolates was
then separated from the other ones, and each group was contained in a small box of its own of a different colour: one box
contained the chocolate-coated cherries, one contained the pralines, and so on.
Can you calculate mentally, without paper and pencil, the total number of wrappings, of any kind, that we needlessly took home when we bought this box of chocolates?
